Since its conception, over 170 years ago, Holland & Sherry has continued to supply prestigious tailors and luxury brands with the finest cloth. In 1836 Stephen George Holland & Frederick Sherry began the business as woollen merchants. The two specialized in both woollen and silk cloth. In 1886, Holland & Sherry moved premises to Golden Square, at the time the epicentre of the woollen merchanting trade.
Before the year 1900, the firm had exported to many countries. Around that time a sales office established itself in New York. In the early part of the twentieth century, the United Kingdom, Europe, North and South America were the dominant markets for the company. Amongst other distribution arrangements, there was a Holland & Sherry warehouse in Russia. It was a successful market before the revolution.
By 1982, the business moved to Savile Row, which remains as their registered head office. In 1968 Holland & Sherry bought Scottish cloth merchant, Lowe Donald, based at Peebles, in the Scottish Borders and decided to locate their distribution to the purpose built warehouse there. Of all the cloth merchants of Golden Square which were established in the late 1800’s, only Holland & Sherry remains. Over the decades they have purchased nearly twenty other wool companies.
They constantly engage in research for finer and more luxurious fibres and fabric qualities; sourcing the finest natural fibres, ranging from super 200’s with cashmere to pure worsted Vicuña. Their cloths are woven in the time honoured way by generations of craftsmen to assured quality and good taste. A bespoke tailored garment in luxury Holland & Sherry cloth is truly an investment and always a pleasure to wear.
As you know, we always look to share our love of quality fabrics and fine craftsmanship. We’ve showed you last season’s Spring Jacketing Fabrics by Holland & Sherry. This week we are exploring the boldness and depth of their freshly arrived summer fabrics. Take a look at our new bold Holland & Sherry Fabrics For Summer:
The Ideal Travel Suit
A plain weave worsted fabric that has a firm, round and crisp handle making it the ideal choice for a durable travel suit.
This quality has become a popular and reliable core fabric within the Holland & Sherry collection and contains many of the key qualities required by tailors.
The full-bodied crimp of merino wool has exceptional recovery properties, which produces a high-performance, crease-resistant cloth. These fabrics retain their smooth finish and smart, stylish appearance. This versatile bunch offers a range of designs that will appeal to almost everyone and is the ultimate choice for the business traveller.
Serge & Solana
The Perfect Summer Suit
Offering unparalleled comfort, Holland & Sherry’s Summer Serge collection includes two lines – both perfect for summer tailoring.
A traditional serge made from Super 100’s merino wool worsted and constructed from a 2/2 twill weave. A serge has the same number of threads in both the warp and weft directions and when woven the twill line runs from left to right at a 45-degree angle.
Traditionally, serge cloths served the military because of their ability to withstand harsh wear. Today, a serge fabric is more versatile making it the ideal choice for core pieces.
Solana, a classic sun cloth woven in the traditional way!
Sol – the Latin name for sun, Lana, the Latin name for wool – when combined forms the name Solana. With its extensive colour palette, the Solana collection surpasses all others.
This exclusive collection of beautiful, wool-silk, iridescent fabrics woven from classic coloured warp shades with sun dazzling, vividly coloured wefts. The 2/1 herringbone construction allows the weft colours to discreetly shine through, producing fabrics with superior lustre and a stunning array of colour. Creating the perfect colour palette to make you stand out with bold Holland & Sherry Fabrics this Summer.
The Luxury Summer Jacketing
Oceania is a collection of lightweight summer jackets. It is inspired by the oceans and ocean beds that lie deep beneath them.
Delicate hues of blue, teal, turquoise, warm tans and coral, feature in this comprehensive collection of contemporary checks, windowpanes, semi plains, and bold, textured, stripe designs.
The delicate use of coloUr, texture, and design reflect the true glory of this collection, making it one of the most sought-after collections for this season.
The idea of the suit, an outfit of matching jacket and trousers, is widely credited as British.
We are proud to partner with renowned English mills that have been at the forefront of the textiles and tailoring industry for more than 200 years. Holland & Sherry is proud of its British heritage and continues to source cloth from textile manufacturers in Yorkshire and Scotland.
For more than 2 centuries British menswear has produced original and authentic fabric and garments, including tartan, tweed and fine woolen, and worsted cloths. In the late 18th century, the fashionable tailors developed British menswear and utilized British textiles. The experts formed a tight circle of workshops in London’s West End. Today, it is globally known as Savile Row.
The West Yorkshire textile industry focuses on the manufacture of wool fabrics for men’s suiting. The industry also benefits from a damp climate and Pennine water which are suited to the spinning and finishing of cotton and wool. Yorkshire mills are proud companies of tradition. The history and expertise are at the base of the company and often stretch over generations. Yorkshire textiles have a reputation for high-end products based on the quality of raw materials and a high standard for finishing touches and precision.
